CCaTS: Accelerating discoveries toward better health
Mayo Clinic Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCaTS) is a central hub for institutional advancement of research and education at Mayo Clinic. The center provides tools and expert consultation to support every aspect of medical research, including basic discovery science, clinical and community-engaged research, and late-stage application and commercialization.
CCaTS is led by Claudia Lucchinetti, M.D., principal investigator and director of CCaTS and dean for clinical and translational science at Mayo Clinic. David O. Warner, M.D., is co-principal investigator and associate director of CCaTS, and is also principal investigator of the KL2 mentored career development grant. Anthony J. Windebank, M.D., is principal investigator of the TL1 predoctoral training grant.

Dr. Lewis Roberts Named Fellow Of AAAS
Lewis R. Roberts, M.B., Ch.B., Ph.D., has been named a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in honor of his contributions to the field of hepatobiliary cancers and his commitment to bringing science to underserved communities.
The AAAS Council elects fellows based on extraordinary achievements across disciplines to advance science in ways that are deemed scientifically or socially distinguished. Election as an AAAS Fellow is a lifetime honor.
Dr. Roberts is a gastroenterologist and hepatologist and leads Mayo Clinic's Hepatobiliary Cancer Laboratory. A recent story on Mayo's Advancing the Science blog shared his passion for health disparities research and his goal to achieve "a world without viral hepatitis." He has also been recognized as an outstanding mentor, frequently working with summer research program students and early-career investigators.
Other recent honorees from Mayo Clinic include: Guojun Bu, Ph.D. (2018); Louis (Jim) J. Maher, III, Ph.D. (2019); and Daniel J. Schaid, Ph.D. (2020). A few historic fellows from Mayo Clinic included: Herbert M. Giffin, M.D. (1933); Albert C. Broders, M.D. (1941); and Edward J. Baldes, M.D. (1941).
Walleye Tank Competition Names Biomedical Innovation Champs
Twelve teams from Mayo Clinic and across Minnesota cast their reels in Walleye Tank: Ice Fishing Edition competition in December 2021. Over 200 people gathered virtually to watch as teams in three divisions — Junior Angler, Midlevel Reeler and Professionals — pitched their biomedical innovation ideas before a panel of expert judges.

Clinic Trials Are A Way Of 'Paying It Forward' To Your Own Community
In this article, Community Advisory Board member Kathi Hansberry shared per thoughts and experiences on the importance of increasing the number of Black people who participate in clinical trials. This board brings together people with broad experiences to provide consultation and guidance to Mayo Clinic researchers.

New Research Center To Address Effects Of Racism On Heart Health
In Minnesota, people of color experience some of the worst health disparities the U.S. The Center for Chronic Disease Reduction and Equity Promotion Across Minnesota, or C2DREAM, is a new research center led by Mayo Clinic and the University of Minnesota that aims to reduce these disparities in collaboration with Minnesota community leaders and community health organizations.

Retrospective Study Finds That Cancer Drug Also Lowers Blood Glucose
Dasatinib, a drug that often is used to treat certain types of leukemia, may have antidiabetic effects comparable to medications used to treat diabetes, and with more research may become a novel therapy for diabetic patients, according to new research published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings.
