About this study

Obesity is associated with differences in stomach function, feeling of fullness after meals, and total calories consumed at a buffet meal. Based upon previous research, our study hypothesis is that weight loss with pharmacological agents may be individualized, based on the abnormality in those gastrointestinal functions. These studies will provide support for the principle that specific obesity medications should be selected according to individual characteristics, and it is anticipated that this approach will enhance the effectiveness of medication treatment of obesity.

About this study

The purpose of this study is to evaluate if a lidocaine infusion during surgery will provide benefit to pancreatectomy patients in regards to analgesia and return of bowel function.

About this study

Advisory Committee for Immunization Practices (ACIP) from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends that children (6-18 years) and adults (≥19 years old) with chronic lung condition such as asthma or cigarette smoking be vaccinated with Pneumococcal vaccine (PPSV23). The purpose of this study is to increase awareness of vaccination to late adolescents with asthma and smokers (social aspect of study), and to recommend vaccination (which is the clinical aspect). Individuals who agree to receiving vaccine will be enrolled in research to determine whether late adolescents with and without asthma (smokers) have distinctive pneumococcal vaccine response patterns and whether such patterns are associated with subsequent variance in asthma outcomes.

About this study

In the southwest region of Alaska where the project takes place, 79% of Alaska Native women smoke cigarettes or use smokeless tobacco (ST) during pregnancy. In addition, pregnancy appears to be a high risk period for initiation of tobacco use, primarily ST, among women reporting no use of tobacco 3 months before pregnancy. Intervention efforts targeting the entire community, not only pregnant women, to address social norms about tobacco use may be effective. Thus, the investigators will evaluate the efficacy of a novel, multi-component, theory-based intervention for reducing tobacco use during pregnancy, incorporating both individually targeted and community level components delivered by female elders "Native Sisters." The intervention builds on effective community and individual-based approaches for tobacco cessation and lay health advisor approaches for cancer prevention among Native American women. As part of the intervention, a social marketing campaign including digital stories and other small media will be developed with community feedback. Individually targeted components will be six 30-40 minute telephone or home-based peer counseling sessions with pregnant women.

About this study

Obesity is associated with reduced adenosine triphosphate (ATP) turnover in skeletal muscle, a condition that can impair muscle metabolism. The proposed research will discover mechanisms responsible for decreased content in mitochondrial proteins as well as in protein β-F1-ATPase, which is directly responsible for ATP assembly, in the muscle of obese individuals. This research will further examine the effectiveness of interventions, such as increased plasma amino acid availability and exercise, to increase the rate of production of mitochondrial proteins as well as that of β-F1-ATPase in the muscle of obese individuals. The findings will help to develop appropriate interventions to improve muscle ATP turnover and metabolism in obese people.

About this study

This pilot study is focused on what assistance an external prosthetic device, the BalanceBelt™ can provide in the:

assessment and
treatment for patients with Chronic Subjective Dizziness (CSD).

The BalanceBelt has sensitive detectors for movement in the anterior/posterior and medial/lateral planes and provides the person wearing the device vibro-tactile feedback as to the persons orientation with respect to gravity. The device is a full self contained device that is comfortably worn around the waist over a light weight shirt. The device is non-FDA approved and is in its final stages of beta testing. Patients with CSD do not have permanent vestibular deficits, but underutilize vestibular signals because they develop visual or somatosensory dependence. The investigators expect the BalanceBeltTM to reset this error by providing patients with reliable motion stimuli.
