The Mayo Clinic Department of Psychiatry and Psychology has a long history of reducing the burden of mental health issues on patients and their families. The department has a wide portfolio of research activities and programs that support Mayo Clinic's goal of integrating clinical practical, research and education. Research teams can be found across Mayo Clinic sites, which include the main campuses in Minnesota, Florida and Arizona and hospitals that make up the Mayo Clinic Health System.

A number of investigators are engaged in multidisciplinary projects across Mayo Clinic and with outside organizations. Some of these Mayo collaborations involve the Mayo Clinic Cancer Center, Mayo Clinic bariatric surgery care team and the Alzheimer's Disease Research Center. Collaborating organizations include the University of Minnesota and the National Network of Depression Treatment Centers, among others.

Due to the extensive range of clinical and educational offerings, U.S. News & World Report recently ranked the Department of Psychiatry and Psychology as one of the top 10 psychiatry departments in the country.

Research committee

The Department of Psychiatry and Psychology research committee fosters the development of externally funded multidisciplinary research teams. Primarily, the committee reviews research protocols for scientific merit and ethical considerations and helps researchers advance protocols through the Institutional Review Board.

To this end, the department offers guidance to principal investigators as they organize teams, formulate questions and prepare protocols, including program and clinical research coordination, translational laboratory research and behavioral health.

Committee members adhere to a competitive selection process, similar to external funding organizations but in a manner friendly to the researcher, encouraging investigators to apply for funding through the departmental small grants program. The committee also organizes and promotes accomplishments within the department and across all Mayo Clinic campuses.
