Neuromodulation

Mayo Clinic's neuromodulation research group investigates the uses of electroconvulsive therapy, transcranial magnetic stimulation and deep brain stimulation to treat mood disorders. Functional neuromodulation, such as deep brain stimulation, offers the opportunity for surgical treatment of refractory psychiatric disorders. Transcranial magnetic stimulation is a novel, noninvasive intervention that effectively treats depression. In addition, the research group performs large multicenter trials of electroconvulsive therapy efficacy and methods to prevent patient relapse after electroconvulsive therapy treatment.

Pediatric anxiety disorders

The goal of this multidisciplinary research group is to improve the care of children and adolescents with anxiety disorders, including obsessive-compulsive disorder.

The team has developed Mayo Clinic Anxiety Coach, an iPhone app for anxiety management in children. Other projects include evaluating the relative effectiveness of different components of cognitive behavioral therapy, examining treatments at the health system level, investigating the relationship between anxiety symptoms and social adjustment, and developing intensive treatments for pediatric anxiety disorders.

Pediatric psychology research

The pediatric psychology research team works with healthcare professionals across Mayo Clinic to support children and their families by initiating new behavioral treatments for young patients with both acute and chronic medical or psychological conditions.

Wellness coaching and resiliency

Mayo Clinic has developed several programs, such as the Mayo Clinic Healthy Living Program, that are designed to enhance the lifestyle of trainees, employees, patients and caregivers.
