windebank.anthony@mayo.edu Clinical Profile

SUMMARY

The diverse research interests of Anthony J. Windebank, M.D., are united by the common biological theme of understanding the cellular mechanisms underlying neuronal death and factors governing regeneration in the nervous system. These mechanisms are studied in cellular, drosophila and rodent model systems.

Dr. Windebank's laboratory collaborates with clinicians and researchers in the departments of Neurology, Neurosurgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Physiology and Biomechanical Engineering, and Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and in the Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Members of the laboratory include technologists, postdoctoral researchers with M.D. or Ph.D. degrees, medical students, graduate students, junior faculty, and visiting scientists.

Focus areas

  • Repair and regeneration after spinal cord injury
  • Repair and regeneration of peripheral nerves
  • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
  • Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy

Significance to patient care

Therapies based on cellular mechanisms for neuronal death and regeneration are translated to patient care using cell and tissue engineering strategies.
