About this study

Pectus excavatum (PE) is a common chest wall deformity where the sternum is displaced posteriorly. In severe cases, surgery is performed to correct the defect (1). In recent years, minimally invasive surgery with the placement of stainless steel support bars has been increasingly performed in patients over the age of 17 years (1-9). Because of the decreased malleability and tremendous pressure required to hold the chest wall in the corrected position, post-operative pain control has been a significant problem in this patient population (2,6,9-12). Thoracic epidurals are commonly employed however mean hospitalizations of up to 7 days have been required before adequate pain control on oral analgesics is obtained (3-5, 13) and patients are suitable for discharge.

It is hypothesized that using the ONQ system (I-Flow Corporation, Lake Forest CA) with bilateral intercostal catheter infusion would provide adequate post operative pain control with a significantly shorter hospital length-of-stay than thoracic epidural. Total use of narcotics for 1 week following surgery would also be less with the ONQ system versus epidural.

About this study

The purpose of this study is to assess the subjective and objective effects that nasal hair has on nasal obstruction. Many studies have been performed measuring and describing the impact of a number of factors on symptoms of nasal obstruction, including anatomical, neoplastic, infectious, and inflammatory causes. Despite this scrutiny, no attention has been paid to the nasal hairs as a potential anatomical contributor to nasal obstruction. .

This confirmatory study is a prospective randomized trial comparing the efficacy and safety of an autologous chondrocyte tissue implant (NeoCart) to the surgical intervention microfracture in the treatment of cartilage defects in the knee.

About this study

This project has three main objectives. First, we will extend our previously successful rehabilitation protocol to a larger set of active-duty service members who have suffered combat-related lower limb trauma. Second, we will assess the extent to which the benefits of improved motor skills conferred by the rehabilitation protocol are retained following training. Third, we will identify, evaluate, and implement existing low cost technologies for measuring trunk control, the training outcome of critical importance, which may be used in lieu of expensive fixed motion capture systems.

About this study

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of AtriCure's CryoICE Ablation System in performing the Cox-Maze III Lesion set surgical procedure, in conjunction with LAA exclusion using ArtiCure's AtriClip device.

The effectiveness of the device will be demonstrated by establishing that the device effectively eliminates persistent and long-standing persistent atrial fibrillation in a clinically significant proportion of treated patients.

About this study

During the early phases (phases 1 and 2), researchers assess safety, side effects, optimal dosages and risks/benefits. In the later phase (phase 3), researchers study whether the treatment works better than the current standard therapy. They also compare the safety of the new treatment with that of current treatments. Phase 3 trials include large numbers of people to make sure that the result is valid. There are also less common very early (phase 0) and later (phase 4) phases. Phase 0 trials are small trials that help researchers decide if a new agent should be tested in a phase 1 trial. Phase 4 trials look at long-term safety and effectiveness, after a new treatment has been approved and is on the market.

About this study

The most promising chimeric natriuretic peptide designed and studied by our group has been CD-NP which has anti-fibrotic and cardioprotective properties in vivo, vitro and in normal volunteers and human heart failure patients. Since left ventricular assist device (LVAD) can not reverse remodeling of the heart whereas it can improve hemodynamics, CD-NP may be novel anti-fibrotic and anti-remodeling drug as co-therapy during LVAD support.

About this study

The Pilot study is designed to evaluate the overall safety and feasibility of a strategy based on subcutaneous delivery of furosemide. It will be used to inform the subsequent evaluation phase of the study (separate protocol). The primary objective of the study is to determine if a strategy of a novel subcutaneous delivery of furosemide is safe and feasible in patients with acute heart failure.
