Study of AI-Based Interpreter Tools in ICU Clinical Communication

About this study

The purpose of this study is evaluate the effectiveness of ChatGPT, Google Assistant and AI-TransLATE interpreter modes in simulated clinical settings, focusing on their accuracy, usability, and clinician satisfaction. By simulating medical discussions about end-of-life care, goals of care, and ICU scenarios using simulated patients and inviting clinicians as participants, we aim to observe how well these AI tools support real-time communication.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Clinicians:  We will recruit interested clinicians engaging in complex care discussions including critical care clinicians, palliative care clinicians, hospitalists, and other clinicians who engage in complex care discussions working at Mayo Clinic Rochester

  • Research Fellows and Trainees (serving as simulated patients): linguistically diverse, providing adequate representation across different languages for bidirectional conversations

Exclusion Criteria: 

  • Under 18 years of age
