Michael Camilleri, M.D.
Dr. Michael Camilleri received his undergraduate training at St. Aloysius College, B'Kara, Malta and his M.D. from the University of Malta Medical School in 1975. He pursued a research fellowship and Gastroenterology training at Hammersmith Hospital, London, UK and a second 2 year research fellowship at Mayo Clinic. He joined the staff of Mayo Clinic in 1987. He is currently a consultant in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology and in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics. He is a Professor of Medicine and Physiology. He is a member of the Minnesota Medical Association, the International Neurogastroenterology and Motility Society (member of steering committee), the American Motility Society (council member), the American College of Physicians, the American College of Gastroenterology and the American Gastroenterological Association. Dr. Camilleri's research interests include functional gastrointestinal disorders, visceral hypersensitivity, gastric accommodation, adrenergic and serotonergic control of gut motility and sensation, pharmacology of the gastrointestinal tract and clinical trials. He is currently editor of Neurogastroenterology and motility and editor of Clinical Gastroenterology.
Gianrico Farrugia, M.D.
Dr. Gianrico Farrugia received his undergraduate training at St. Aloysius College, B'Kara, Malta and his M.D. from the University of Malta Medical School in 1987. He is currently a Consultant in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology and in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics. He is a member of the Minnesota Medical Association, the International Neurogastroenterology and Motility Society, the American Motility Society, the American College of Physicians, the American College of Gastroenterology, the American Gastroenterological Association, and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. Dr. Farrugia?s current research interests include mechanosensitive ion channels, ion channel regulation in gastrointestinal smooth muscle, the treatment of disorders of gastrointestinal motility and the role of interstitial cells of Cajal in the regulation of gastrointestinal motility in health and in disease states.
Joseph H. Szurszewski, Ph.D.
Dr. Joseph H. Szurszewski received his Ph.D. in physiology from the University of Illinois in 1968. He is currently a Consultant in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics and the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. He is a member of the American Physiological Society, American Gastroenterological Association, American Motility Society, International Motility Society, Society for Neurosciences, and The Physiology Society London. He was Chair, Department of Physiology and Biophysics, a member of the National Advisory Council, NIDDK, NIH, and president of the American Motility Society. Doctor Szurszewski's current research interests are in the extrinsic and intrinsic neural control mechanisms of motility, the biology of smooth muscle cells and interstitial cells of Cajal, and 3-D imaging of single enteric neurons, smooth muscle cells and interstitial cells.
