SUMMARY

The research interests of Peter A. Smars, M.D., include studying methods to improve the efficiency and accuracy of diagnosing, treating and triaging emergent cardiac conditions in patients who present to the emergency department (ED).

Focus areas

  • Emergency cardiology issues such as atrial fibrillation, syncope and cardiac markers
  • Cardiac-strain assessment in patients with chest pain
  • Clinical application of magnetocardiography (MCG)
  • Sensitivity, specificity and usability of a portable MCG device to evaluate chest pain in the ED
  • Sensitivity and specificity of a stationary, shielded MCG device for patients requiring coronary angiograms
  • Quality improvement projects in evaluating acute chest pain in the ED

Significance to patient care

Using MCG to confirm or rule out acute coronary syndrome in patients who present to the ED with chest pain or discomfort will enable providers to arrive at a much quicker and accurate diagnosis, which will result in improved treatment and outcomes.
