Taofic Mounajjed, M.D., is a surgical, gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary pathologist with research interest in hepatocellular and biliary neoplasms.

Dr. Mounajjed is primarily interested in correlating between morphologic and molecular features of hepatocellular and biliary neoplasms in order to achieve better tumor subclassification schema.

Focus areas

  • Hepatocellular neoplasia. Dr. Mounajjed is interested in the study of hepatic adenoma variants in humans and has been involved in studies of hepatocellular carcinogenesis in animal models as well.
  • Cholangiocarcinoma. Dr. Mounajjed studies the pathologic and molecular features of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma.
  • Non-neoplastic liver disease. Dr. Mounajjed researches non-neoplastic liver conditions such as vascular disease and chronic cholestatic liver diseases.

Significance to patient care

Dr. Mounajjed's research aims at studying the pathology and identifying specific subtypes of hepatocellular and cholangiocellular neoplasms, based on morphology, phenotype and genotype. Understanding different subtypes of these tumors can allow better risk stratification for patients and offer better treatment plans.
