Orthopedic Surgery Artificial Intelligence Laboratory
A note from our research sponsor in the division
The Orthopedic Surgery Artificial Intelligence Laboratory brings together orthopedic surgeons, radiologists, epidemiologists, biostatisticians, computer scientists and biomedical engineers. The lab focuses on developing, validating and implementing advanced artificial intelligence (AI) tools that improve diagnosis, surgical decision-making, treatment planning and long-term outcomes for people with musculoskeletal disease.
Gap year students will take part in projects applying machine learning, deep learning, large language models and computer vision to clinically relevant orthopedic challenges, tailored to the students' interests, including:
- AI-based medical image analysis, including automated annotation and interpretation of radiographs, CT scans and other musculoskeletal imaging.
- Risk prediction and outcome modeling for complications, recovery trajectories and revision risk.
- Development of large imaging registries and curated clinical datasets to support multicenter collaboration.
- Natural language processing of operative and clinical notes to support automated research workflows.
Students will participate in regular project meetings and receive individualized mentorship in research methods and scientific writing, with opportunities to present findings at institutional, regional or national meetings.
The lab has supported 25 fellows, including nine medical students. Alumni have achieved a 100% residency match rate and an average of more than 20 peer-reviewed publications per fellow.
The Orthopedic Surgery Artificial Intelligence Laboratory accepts one student through the Gap Year Program.
