Hand and wrist

A note from our research sponsor in the division

The Division of Hand Surgery is a multidisciplinary division of orthopedic and plastic hand surgeons, physical medicine and rehabilitation physicians, and hand therapists who care for a wide range of hand pathologies, both simple and complex. The Division of Hand Surgery has a distinguished academic history and a strong culture of research, driving advances in hand and upper extremity surgery.

Gap year students will be able to take part in retrospective, prospective and randomized control trials tailored to the students' interests.

The wide range of expertise within the division allows for high-quality research topics across all disciplines of hand surgery, including some of the following:

  • Peripheral nerve and brachial plexus injuries.
  • Hand and wrist trauma.
  • Reconstruction and repair of wrist ligament and cartilage injuries through minimally invasive surgery.
  • Congenital hand surgery.
  • Management of hand and wrist arthritis.
  • Tetraplegia and spasticity.

In addition, students will participate in the weekly hand surgery conference, journal club and research meetings, with opportunities to attend national meetings such as by Mid-America Orthopedic Association, American Society for Surgery of the Hand, American Association for Hand Surgery, and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

The Division of Hand and Wrist Surgery accepts one student through the Gap Year Program.
