Overview
The Division of Pediatric Endocrinology and Metabolism has a long-standing history of carrying out research that will directly benefit patient care. We continue to participate in the National Cooperative Growth Hormone Study and have also been interested in looking at the specific effects of growth hormone on carbohydrate metabolism. Since many of our patients have Type 1 diabetes, we have been interested in studying ways to optimize blood sugar control in these patients, using new insulin preparations, as well as new delivery systems such as insulin pumps.
Our research focus has recently expanded with the addition of new faculty members. Since there is currently an epidemic of obesity in children, our research focus has expanded to include trying to understand the metabolic changes that occur in obesity. We are also looking at optimizing bone mineralization during childhood and adolesence.
