Researchers in the Division of Neurosurgery and Skull Base Surgery work to improve care for patients with vestibular schwannoma and patients undergoing anterior skull base surgery.
Neurosurgery and Skull Base Surgery
The Department of Otolaryngology — Head and Neck Surgery's Division of Neurosurgery and Skull Base Surgery has a long track record of collaboration on multidisciplinary projects. As critical contributors to Mayo Clinic's skull base team, faculty members from the Department of Neurologic Surgery, in particular, are intimately involved in the division's research.
The Division of Neurosurgery and Skull Base Surgery's collaborative research includes:
- Anatomic investigations.
- Basic science research.
- Prospective clinical trials.
- Surgical outcomes research.
On an ongoing basis, researchers collect prospective data on patients with vestibular schwannoma and patients undergoing anterior skull base surgery. The division conducts anatomical research in its shared dissection laboratory.
The division also works closely with the Division of Neurosurgery and Skull Base Surgery to support Mayo Clinic's Rhoton Neurosurgery and Otolaryngology Surgical Anatomy Program. This program offers theoretical and practical training, research fellowships, and educational programs in surgical anatomy to improve the teaching-learning process in neurosurgery, otolaryngology, and related fields in the U.S. and around the world.
