Overview

The Department of Family Medicine-Research at Mayo Clinic is dedicated to advancing the health and well-being of individuals, families and communities. We deliver comprehensive, patient-centered care across a broad spectrum of medical, health and wellness needs, including preventive services, screenings, management of acute and chronic conditions, and palliative care. Our commitment to excellence is reflected in our innovative clinical practice, research and education.

Our research agenda is guided by the needs of our patients and the evolving landscape of family medicine.

We focus on improving health outcomes, enhancing the quality and value of care, and advancing the training of future family physicians. Through collaborative, multidisciplinary research, we seek new insights into disease prevention, diagnosis and treatment, while driving innovations in clinical practice and healthcare delivery.

Research in the Department of Family Medicine-Research focuses on:

  • Clinical research. Investigating disease mechanisms, prevention strategies and innovative treatments to improve patient outcomes.
  • Quality and practice improvement. Enhancing care delivery through projects in cervical cancer screening, Pap tests, prenatal care, triage, virtual care and more.
  • Innovation and technology. Leveraging artificial intelligence, digital health and new care models to transform family medicine.
  • Community engagement and health equity. Addressing disparities and promoting inclusive care for diverse populations.

Department leadership

  • David R. Rushlow, M.D., is chair of the Department of Family Medicine. Dr. Rushlow leads our department's commitment to excellence in patient care, research and education.
  • Tom D. Thacher, M.D., is the department's vice chair of research. Dr. Thacher oversees research initiatives that drive innovation and improve outcomes in family medicine.
