James H. and Helen F. Crossingham Emergency Medicine Award

Jana L. Anderson, M.D., is the most recent awardee of the James H. and Helen F. Crossingham Emergency Medicine Award. Dr. Anderson is a consultant and researcher with a specialty in the care of children. She has used the award to advance her research skills and knowledge in acute pain management for children.

With support from the Crossingham award, Dr. Anderson has completed the first phase of the PEdiatric Acute Pain and OpioiD (PEAPOD) project. The initial phase included a description of the prevalence of pediatric pain in the emergency department and the trends of pediatric opioid use in the emergency department. In addition to opioids, researchers working on the PEAPOD project are examining evidence for low-dose ketamine for children as an opioid alternative for pain management.

The next phase of the PEAPOD project began in 2020. In this phase, researchers are looking at factors of opioid use in children that may contribute to opioid abuse. The study is examining opioid prescriptions from sources across the nation. The goal is to identify any factors that may lead to repeat opioid prescriptions in children.

The Mayo Clinic Division of Emergency Medicine Research thanks Mr. and Mrs. Crossingham for this faculty development award. Dr. Anderson's faculty development and associated research strengthens the department and will have a lasting impact on acute care delivery for children at local and national levels.
