A Study Of GLP-1 Receptor Agonists On Sarcopenia In Older Adults

Overview

About this study

The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of GLP-1 RA pharmacotherapy on muscle mass and muscle protein turnover (synthesis and breakdown) in older adults.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Age, 60 and older

  • Prescribed GLP-1 RA medication in the Clinic

Exclusion Criteria:

  • MSSE score < 24

  • BMI >55 kg/m2 (for practical considerations related to the difficulty in obtaining muscle biopsies and successfully inserting IV catheters in this patient population, based on current experiences)

  • Supplements affecting protein metabolism

  • Diabetes

  • Presence of acute illness

  • Renal disease (due to potential confounding effects on muscle protein metabolism)

  • Congestive heart failure

  • Low hemoglobin or hematocrit

  • Use anabolic steroids or corticosteroids

  • Not classified as inactive/sedentary based on the Stanford Brief Activity Survey  and accelerometry data (i.e., sedentary/energy expenditure corresponding to ≤1.5 METs

  • Currently on a weight loss intervention or planning to undertake a weight loss intervention (besides GLP-1 RAs)

  • Smoking

  • Gastro-intestinal surgery

  • Cannot abstain from use of anticoagulants and medications such as aspirin, coumadin, plavix

  • Any other condition or event considered exclusionary by the Investigators/Study Physician.

Note: Other protocol defined Inclusion/Exclusion Criteria may apply.
