A Study Of Hear HE App: Automated Speech Analysis To Hepatic Encephalopathy

About this study

This study aims to field-test Hear HE, and utilize patient feedback to develop a beta version of the app. This study will be conducted in multiple stages of app testing, soliciting user feedback via surveys and focus groups, and app updates based on that feedback.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria (All Subjects):

  • Age 18 years or older

  • Able to provide informed consent

  • Fluent in English

Inclusion Criteria (Decompensated Cirrhosis Groups):

  • History of cirrhosis, as diagnosed by imaging, elastography, or biopsy

  • Evidence of cirrhosis decompensation: history of ascites, variceal bleeding, or development of hepatic encephalopathy

Exclusion Criteria (All Subjects):

  • Neurodegenerative disorder (other than hepatic encephalopathy) including Alzheimer’s disease and dementia

  • Prior stroke or TIA

  • Inability to complete study activities: significant vision/hearing impairments, no access to compatible device for home app use, or other limitation

 Exclusion Criteria (Healthy Control Group):

  • History of cirrhosis, as diagnosed by imaging, elastography, or biopsy

  • Serious ongoing chronic condition
