A Study Of Fatty Infiltration Of The Opponens Pollicis Muscle And Symptomatic Thumb Carpometacarpal

About this study

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the association of thumb carpometacarpal (CMC) arthritis and fatty infiltration (FI) of the opponens pollicis muscle with hand symptoms as measured by the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) for Pain and the Boston Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Questionnaire (BCTQ).

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:      

  • Subjects 18 years or older with a wrist MRI showing thumb CMC arthritis and/or opponens FI, providing consent to complete questionnaires.

 

Exclusion Criteria:     

  • Thumb fractures, wrist fractures or penetrating thumb trauma in the last 6 months.  Carpal tunnel syndrome with abnormal motor tests, on electrodiagnostic testing (motor latency or amplitude changes or abnormal EMG).   Active inflammatory arthritis (such as rheumatoid, lupus, or psoriatic arthritis).  Inability to give consent or complete questionnaires.
