Breath Biomarkers In Human Performance Physiology

About this study

The purpose of this project is to begin to capture the breath biome as it relates to age, fitness, recovery and general health with the goal of developing profiles with known biomarkers or ultimately using AI to find signatures that define these key markers of human health and peformance. 

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • No contraindications to exercise as indicated by the Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire (PAR-Q+) and medical history form approved by the Knowledge Enterprise clinical research services.
  • Not currently taking medicine or experiencing illness that may influence the cardiovascular system.
  • Not taken non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs one week prior to enrolment.
  • Age ranges between 18 and 30, and 60 to 79 years old, and injury free (skeletal muscle) for greater than 3 months.

Exclusion Criteria: 

  • Minors (under 18)
  • Adults who are unable to consent (impaired decision-making capacity)
  • Prisoners
  • Pregnant Women
  • People weighing less than 40 kg
  • Per the ASU policy FIN 421-05, if you will be compensated more than $600 from research conducted at ASU in a 2024 we will need to collect your mailing address and tax id in order to issue a 1099-MISC. Collecting this information allows ASU to meet government reporting obligations and precautions are in place to assure confidentiality and data security as described under ‘confidentiality’. If you believe you will receive >$600 in 2024 as an ASU research participant, please provide your home address and tax id.
