About this study

The purpose of this prospective observational study is to gather and evaluate the evidence for attending surgeons’ technical and tactical abilities and cognitive workload, during cardiac surgery.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria: 

  • Patients 18 years of age and older undergoing a cardiac surgery at partnering centers.
  • Cardiothoracic surgeons and trainees involved in cardiac surgery at partnering centers.
  • Cardiothoracic surgeons and trainees indicating successful calculation of Heart Rate Variability (HRV) attributed to sinus rhythm and captured by the Polar Team Pro software through the chest strap.
  • Peer assessors who will be trained to apply validated taxonomies to segmented recordings.

Exclusion Criteria: 

  • Cardiothoracic surgeons and trainees indicating unsuccessful calculation of Heart Rate Variability (HRV) due to non-sinus heart rate rhythm.
