A Study Of Telemedicine For Forensic Certification Exams

About this study

The purpose of this study is to Assess the fidelity of using a kiosk model to detect safety-sensitive physical abnormalities in a study cohort with both normal physical and known physical deficiencies. Determine technological limitations in instrumentation and software used within a kiosk model. Obtain satisfaction data from providers in performing forensic physical examinations remotely for certification of safety-sensitive maneuvers (i.e. operation of aircraft).

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

Any Mayo Clinic patient aged 18-85 years with a known physical deficiency that could be extrapolated to be a safety-sensitive finding if that individual was a pilot (study subjects would be recruited for specific known abnormalities such as a heart murmur, cataract, movement disorder, etc. or to serve as a normal control).
Availability to participate in multiple in-person and/ or multiple virtual physical examinations by different providers, some examinations occurring on the same day.

Exclusion Criteria:

Patients with visual or auditory acuity abnormalities that would preclude them from communicating with a provider remotely via a computer monitor.
Inability to read or speak English.
Immobility that would require assistance from another individual.
Inability to operate a smart phone or use on-line apps.
