About this study

The purpose of this research is to gain an in-depth understanding of the patient and clinician’s journey for awake neurosurgical spine and craniotomy cases, spanning from diagnosis through recovery. This study serves as a foundational initiative supporting the establishment of a destination center at Mayo Clinic Florida for awake neurosurgery procedures.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Patients who are scheduled for awake neurosurgery and are willing and able to participate in interviews and journaling activities will be included.
  • Family members who serve as primary caregivers for these patients will also be invited to participate.
  • Clinicians eligible for inclusion must be actively involved in any phase of the awake neurosurgical process, whether preoperative, intraoperative, or postoperative.

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Patients include those with significant cognitive or communication impairments that may prevent effective participation and those unable to engage in follow-up interviews due to medical or personal circumstances.
  • Clinicians who are not actively engaged in awake neurosurgical care during the study period will be excluded.
