A Study Of Artificial Intelligence Virtual Assistant (AIVA) In Post-operative Surgical Care

About this study

The purpose of this study is to focuses on creating a new iteration of a virtual assistant (called “RAG-LLM AIVA”) to help patients by answering their questions about their postoperative care. We want to make sure this assistant can find and share accurate health information and give personalized answers to patients’ questions. In this study, we will not train or create any new models or algorithms

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Adult patients aged 18 years and older

  • Patients who have surgery procedures at Mayo Clinic Florida

  • Currently in postoperative recovery period (within 2 weeks of surgery)

  • Able to read and understand English

  • Capable of providing informed consent

  • Access to smartphone, tablet, or computer with internet connectivity

  • Willing to participate in the study for the single visit during which they will interact with the chatbot in the clinic.

  • Able to complete post-interaction surveys and questionnaires

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Patients under 18 years of age

  • Patients with cognitive impairment that would prevent informed consent or meaningful system use

  • Patients with urgent medical conditions requiring immediate clinical attention or hospitalization

  • Patients who decline participation or withdraw consent at any time

  • Patients unable to read or understand English

  • Patients who are unable or unwilling to complete the required study procedures

  • Patients with severe visual, hearing, or motor impairments that would prevent effective use of the digital interface
