Mucosal Impedance In Achalasia Patients After POEM

About this study

The purpose of this study is to assess esophageal mucosal impedance (MI) in post-POEM achalasia patients with gastroesophageal reflux compared to those without.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Male or female ≥ 18 years of age.

  • Confirmed diagnosis of achalasia based on clinical symptoms, high-resolution esophageal manometry, and timed barium esophagram

  • Planning to undergo POEM as durable therapy for achalasia

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Grade B/C/D esophagitis during post-POEM EGD

  • History of prior myotomy.

  • History of botulinum toxin injection within the last 6 months or 30 mm balloon dilation in the last 12 months.

  • History of esophageal ablation.

  • History of esophageal stricture.

  • History of esophageal or gastric surgery.

  • Pregnancy.

  • History of delayed gastric emptying confirmed by 4-hour gastric emptying study.

  • Receipt of glucagon-like peptide-1 agonists.

  • Adults lacking the capacity to consent for self.
