A Study Of MREE In Liver Transplantation

Overview

About this study

The aim of this study is to evaluate the association of resting measured energy expenditure (mREE), VO2, VCO2, and respiratory quotient (RQ) with clinical and metabolic outcomes in the setting of liver transplantation.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Liver transplant cohort — Inclusion Criteria:

  • Adult patients (≥18 years)

  • Diagnosed with cirrhosis based on clinical, laboratory, and/or imaging findings.

  • In the process of liver transplant evaluation

  • Ability to obtain informed consent from the patient or legally authorized representative

Liver transplant cohort — Exclusion Criteria:

  • Acute liver failure as the indication for transplant.

  • Active malignancy other than transplant-relevant hepatobiliary/neuroendocrine malignancies permitted by the underlying transplant protocol

Healthy comparator cohort — Inclusion Criteria:

  • Age ≥18 years, with aim to keep age distribution as close as feasible to that of transplant population

  • 10 male and 10 female volunteers

  • Body mass index 18.0–30.0 kg/m² at the study visit.

  • Self-reported absence of known cirrhosis or chronic heart, kidney or uncontrolled thyroid or diabetes

  • Ability to obtain informed consent

  • FibroScan liver stiffness measurement (LSM) <8.0 kPa.

  • FibroScan controlled attenuation parameter (CAP) <260 dB/m.

  • Blood records or health data will not be accessed

Healthy comparator cohort — Exclusion Criteria:

  • Known advanced chronic liver disease/cirrhosis by self-report.

  • LSM ≥8.0 kPa on study FibroScan.

  • CAP ≥260 dB/m on study FibroScan.

  • Known heart failure.

  • Known diabetes mellitus

  • End-stage renal disease or on dialysis.

  • Known uncontrolled thyroid disease.

  • Acute illness, infection, hospitalization, or other clinically significant condition at the time of assessment that may materially alter resting energy expenditure.

  • Pregnancy

  • Current direct supervisory, reporting, performance-evaluation, or dependent employment relationship with the Principal Investigator or another member of the study team.

  • Eligibility will be confirmed by participant self report. Routine medical records, employee health records, occupational health records, and personnel records will not be accessed for screening or eligibility determination

Note: Other protocol defined Inclusion/Exclusion Criteria may apply.
