A Study Of Breathing Disturbances Using Apple HealthKit For Sleep Apnea

About this study

The purpose of this study is to determine the agreement between Breathing Disturbances and AHI based on same night recording of BD from Apple Watch and AHI from PSG.

Secondary aim: Determine the agreement between Breathing Disturbances and AHI based on same night recording of BD from Apple Watch and AHI from HSAT. Determine the agreement between Breathing Disturbances and AHI based on same night recording of BD from Apple Watch and Oxygen Desaturation Index (ODI) from overnight oximetry.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Adults, ≥ 18 years old.

  • Obstructive sleep apnea, defined as AHI ≥ 5 on polysomnography or home sleep apnea testing within the past 2 years.

  • Undergoing polysomnography (PSG), home sleep apnea testing (HSAT), or overnight oximetry with OAT in place for clinical purposes.

  • Able to read and understand English.

  • Able to provide informed consent

  • If using personal Apple Watch for any Arm:

    • Patients must own an Apple Watch Series 9, Apple Watch Ultra 2, or Apple Watch Series 10 (no earlier models can record BD).

  • For Arms 2 and 3, patients must own an iPhone capable of interfacing with Apple Watch

    • Apple Watch Series 9 or Apple Watch Ultra 2 owners will require:

      • iPhone XS or later

      • iOS 17 or later

      • watchOS 10 or later

    • Apple Watch Series 10 will require:

    • iPhone XS or later

    • iOS 18 or later

    • watchOS 11 or later

  • For Arms 2 and 3, patients must be willing to download study protocol Application from App Store

 

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Not willing or unable to wear and use an Apple Watch for the duration of PSG, HSAT or overnight oximetry.
