A Study Of MCP For Progressive Motor Speech Disorders

About this study

The purpose of this study is to co-design an adapted MCP protocol that addresses the unique needs of living with a progressive motor speech disorder by using reflexive ethnography with people from the target population who have completed the standard protocol.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Age between 18 and 90 years old.

  • English fluency.

  • Located in the United States.

  • Have had previous contact with a Mayo Clinic speech-language pathologist or neurologist, either through a clinical or research visit.

  • Diagnosed with a motor speech disorder (i.e., apraxia of speech or dysarthria) that is progressive by history.

  • Able to communicate effectively enough to participate in the intervention (i.e., intelligible speech or use of an alternative method that can be used during video visits such as a speech-generating device)

  • Able to utilize the technology to participate in the video visits, independently or with assistance.

  • Able to provide their opinion and experience on the questionnaires and able to complete them by themselves or with assistance (i.e., for those who have severe motor impairments)

  • Able to provide written consent electronically.

 

Exclusion Criteria: 

  • Have an active legally authorized representative

  • Cognitive-linguistic impairment such that they are judged unable to meaningfully participate in the intervention.
