Blood Flow Restriction as Part of a Rehabilitation Protocol Following Surgical Management of Thumb-Based Arthritis

About this study

The purpose of this study is to establish the safety and effectiveness of blood flow restriction as part of a rehabilitation protocol in comparison to a standardized rehabilitation protocol following surgical management of thumb-based arthritis.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Adults over the age of 18.
  • Undergoing any thumb-based arthritis procedure requiring cast immobilization for the first six weeks post-operatively.
  • Commitment to attend weekly hand therapy at the Rochester, MN campus from 6 to 12 weeks post-operative.
  • Commitment to attend clinical followups with hand surgeon 6 months and 12 months post-operative.
  • Ability to read and write English.

Exclusion Criteria: 

  • Injury or history of injury on either upper extremity that requires changes to standard rehab protocol.
  • Prior injury or condition causing altered base function of study hand.
  • Active pregnancy (by patient self-report)
  • History of DVT within the last 12 months.
  • History of ipsilateral upper quadrant lymph node dissection.
  • Endothelial dysfunction.
  • Self-reported early bruising.
  • Active infection.
  • Current cancer diagnosis.
  • Taking blood thinners (other than aspirin)
  • PI discretion.
