Impact Of Respiratory Muscle Training On Blood Glucose And Blood Pressure In Gestational Diabetes Mellitus

Overview

About this study

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the acute effects of a single session of RMT on blood glucose (BG) levels, BP and metabolic responses (e.g., oxygen consumption (VO2), heart rate (HR), tidal volume (Vt), respiratory exchange ratio (RER), respiratory rate (RR) and inspiratory pressure [IP]) in women diagnosed with GDM. Additionally, to examine the differential physiological responses across varying pressure resistance levels during RMT, and assess the feasibility and tolerability of the RMT in this population.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Female participants aged 18-49 years.

  • Currently pregnant (singleton pregnancy)

  • Gestational age requirement: Participants must be between 24+0 and 32+6 weeks’ gestation at the time of the first study visit (confirmed by estimated due date from the medical record or participant-provided documentation) If gestational age falls outside this window, the individual will be screen-failed.

  • Either:

    • Diagnosed with GDM or

    • Healthy pregnant women without GDM.

  • Able to provide informed consent and comply with study procedures.

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Pre-existing diabetes mellitus (type 1 or type 2).

  • High-risk pregnancies (e.g., placenta previa, preeclampsia, incompetent cervix),

  • Any known cardiovascular disease or chronic pulmonary disease,

  • History of preterm labor or premature rupture of membranes in current or previous pregnancies

  • Multiple gestation (e.g., twins or higher-order pregnancies).

  • Any contraindications to exercise or RMT during pregnancy as determined by the healthcare provider.

Note: Other protocol defined Inclusion/Exclusion Criteria may apply.
