About this study

The purpose of this study is to investigate the feasibility, usability, and acceptability of a music therapy informed songwriting intervention and to investigate a songwriting intervention’s impact on anxiety symptoms in adolescents who have SCD. 

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Adolescents aged 11-18 years of age at the time of enrollment and able to provide assent

  • Diagnosed with any type of sickle cell disease

  • Currently receiving care at pediatric center (UMMC Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders)

  • Able to read and write in English

  • Access to electronic device for data collection

  • Participant or parent/legal guardian has access to a gmail account or is willing to obtain one

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Care transitioned to adult facility

  • Visual, hearing, or cognitive impairment which may impede the ability to complete the songwriting intervention or data collection measures
