The Effect of Whole Food Plant-based Diet on Cerebrovascular Reactivity

About this study

The purpose of this study is that a plant-based diet intervention will improve CVR measurements in subjects who were on a typical American/Western diet. 

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • 18 to 70 years of age
  • Currently on a typical Western/American diet based on medical records
  • No exclusion for nut allergies or any other type of allergies

Exclusion Criteria: 

  • Pregnancy or lactation
  • Current use of a vegan diet
  • BMI ≤ 22, or weight >105 kg (limit of the MRI table)
  • Pre-existing significant degree of cardio-pulmonary disease—heart failure with reduced EF of 35 or lower, unstable arrythmia, severe degree of pulmonary hypertension, severe degree of obstructive or restrictive lung disease.
  • Currently on or starting any weight loss medications during the 1-month plant- based diet period
  • Starting a new exercise regime during the 1-month plant- based diet period
  • Patient with contraindications to MRI. These may include the presence of electrically, magnetically, or mechanically activated implants (such as cardiac pacemakers, cochlear implants, implanted pumps), metallic clips in the brain, and inability to follow commands or tolerate MRI. )
