About this study

The purpose of this study is to develop and validate a novel diagnostic test for SFN utilizing RNAseq from skin biopsies of the distal leg.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

INCLUSION CRITERIA:

Participants with peripheral neuropathy

  • Ages 18-90, inclusive.
  • Undergoing workup to determine etiology of their peripheral neuropathy in the Mayo Peripheral Neuropathy Clinic..
  • Either scheduled to undergo a clinically-indicated skin biopsy to measure epidermal nerve fiber density (ENFD), or willing to do so for research purposes.

Participants who are healthy volunteers

  • Ages 18-90, inclusive.
  • No history of peripheral neuropathy (documented or suspected)
  • No history of diabetes mellitus.
  • No history of exposure to neurotoxic chemotherapy.
  • No contraindications to undergoing skin punch biopsy.
  • The diversity of participants will reflect the diversity of those seeking care in the Peripheral Nerve division.  We will attempt to match the healthy volunteers for age, sex, and race.

Exclusion Criteria: 

  • Those that do not meet inclusion.
