A Study of the Transmission Dynamics, Evolution, and Zoonotic Potential of C. Difficile Infection in Pet-Human Interfaces

About this study

 The purpose of this study is to investigate if dogs and cats of patients who have C. difficile-associated diarrhea are colonized with C. difficile and, if so, whether the pets harbor the same C. difficile strains as their owners. Additionally, the study will determine if cats and dogs act as a reservoir for human community-associated C. difficile-associated diarrhea.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Test positive for C. difficile and own a cat and/or dog.

Exclusion Criteria: 

  • Do not own a cat or dog.
