About this study

FIT is grounded in social cognitive, self-determination, and family systems theories and, as such, aims to promote healthy eating and movement habits by facilitating the development of parent-adolescent communication and problem-solving skills to support the adolescents’ and family’s pursuit of health behavior change goals.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Adolescents ages 13-18 years, in school and living with their parents/guardians.
  • BMI is at or above the 95th percentile for age and gender.
  • Adolescent has seen a Mayo Clinic physician or nurse practitioner (NP) for a history and physical exam in the last 6 months and the clinician has documented that weight loss is clinically indicated and participation in exercise is safe for the adolescent.
  • At least 1 of the adolescent’s parents/guardians is willing and able to participate in all study sessions.
  • Adolescents and participating parents/guardians must be able to participate in group sessions conducted in English.
  • Adolescents and participating parents/guardians must be able to participate in group sessions via via telehealth (i.e., access to Internet with a smart phone, tablet, or computer).
  • The adolescent has not experienced active suicidal ideation, psychiatric hospitalization, residential treatment, or substance use treatment in the last 6 months.
  • Adolescent does not have an active eating disorder or substance use disorder.

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Individuals under age of 13 and over age of 18.
