A Study to Evaluate the Mechanisms Leading to Hyperoxaluria and Increased Risk of Kidney Stone Formation after Bariatric Surgery

About this study

This study aims to evaluate the mechanisms leading to hyperoxaluria and increased risk of kidney stone formation after bariatric surgery.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. If you need assistance understanding the eligibility criteria, please contact the study team.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Patient ages 18-70 years old.
  • Patient evaluated at the Nutrition Clinic at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.
  • Patient scheduled to undergo RYGB for the management of medically complicated obesity.
  • Patient must be capable of giving informed consent.
  • Patient must be able to complete all aspects of the study including stool collections.

Exclusion Criteria: 

  • Stage 4-5 CKD.
  • Weigh >660 lbs.
  • Prior kidney transplantation.
  • Use of antibiotics in the 3 months prior to testing.
  • A history of kidney stones will not be an exclusion criterion, although stone events will be careful quantified per and post operatively.
  • Does not have access to a smart phone or computer (to complete food record on Health Watch 360).
