About this study

The purpose of this study is to identify and prioritize outcomes and burdens of treatment that are important to patients and families when making decisions to start versus withhold or continue versus withdraw life support in the intensive care unit.

 

 

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Patients/families who survived acute respiratory failure (invasive mechanical ventilation) during 01/01/2013 – 09/01/2014.
  • Patients/families who survived acute respiratory failure (noninvasive ventilation) during 01/01/2013 – 09/01/2014
  • > 18 years old
  • Give informed consent for participation

Exclusion Criteria: 

  • Minors
  • Prisoners
  • Wards of the state
  • Pregnant women
  • Non-English speakers
