Advancing sex differences research
The Mayo Clinic Specialized Center of Research Excellence (SCORE) on Sex Differences promotes interdisciplinary approaches to advance translational research on sex differences in health and disease. Research spans from basic science projects to clinical studies.
The Mayo Clinic SCORE on Sex Differences is conducting three major translational research projects focused on how abrupt endocrine dysfunction, resulting from premenopausal removal of both ovaries (bilateral oophorectomy), affects accelerated aging and risk of Alzheimer's disease and other brain changes.
The Mayo Clinic SCORE on Sex Differences also serves as a vital hub for education and dissemination of innovative sex-based and sex-informed translational research methods and best practices. The SCORE is a local and national leader in developing and promoting standards and policies for considering sex differences in biomedical research.
Investigators work together as a team to meet the SCORE's goals. They also interact with investigators from SCOREs and women's health research groups at other institutions to improve the health of women.
Viewing research and medical delivery through a sex-based lens, with attention to the individual patient's sex chromosomal complement and hormonal status, is fundamental to personalized care. The Mayo Clinic SCORE on Sex Differences facilitates the incorporation of sex determinants of health, disease, and treatments across Mayo's research and clinical enterprise.

The director of the Mayo Clinic SCORE on Sex Differences is Kejal Kantarci, M.D., a neuroradiologist with special training and experience in relating neuroimaging to aging and dementia. Dr. Kantarci is also a professor of radiology at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science.
