How does your Mayo Graduate School education compare with previous education that you have received at other institutions?
While Mayo Graduate School may be smaller than some programs at large universities, the resources seem greater. The environment is highly collaborative and provides frequent opportunities to interact with other students and faculty from a variety of areas. This allows an ease and openness to discuss ideas, progress, problems and methodologies, thereby helping students develop communication and networking skills.
What opportunities have you been introduced to since being at Mayo Graduate School?
An opportunity provided at Mayo is the ability to be able to meet renowned, visiting scientists. Multiple student symposiums and weekly seminars that are held each year bring in outside scientists to lecture. The especially unique opportunity associated with these lectures and seminars is that students are frequently able to meet the scientists in a small group with other students to be able to ask questions directly focused on a particular area of research or related to career options and paths.
Why did you choose Mayo Graduate School?
In addition to the above opportunities that are unique to Mayo, the foremost factor influencing my decision to choose Mayo Graduate School is the integrated basic science and clinical research programs. Translational science and medicine is a foundation of Mayo Clinic, and there is no other institution that better emphasizes the importance of translational science and provides opportunities for those students who are interested in learning more about this important area.
How would you describe the atmosphere of Mayo Clinic?
Mayo is a warm, welcoming, innovative and collegial environment in which to train and learn.
What are your plans for the future?
I plan to seek a faculty position at a university in order to integrate my interests and training to teach, practice and perform basic science and translational research.
If you could describe Mayo Clinic in one word, what would it be?
With what activities are you involved in Rochester?
The Rochester community provides many activities year-round in which students can be involved. I am particularly interested in tennis, gardening and volunteering.
How does Rochester differ from your hometown? College community?
Rochester is larger than my hometown, but smaller than the other cities in which I completed my undergraduate and veterinary training. Rochester embodies the positive aspects of living in a smaller community but is close to amenities afforded to larger communities through its proximity to the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. If you take the time to look, you will find plenty to do in Rochester and surrounding communities.
