SUMMARY

Savannah M. Zins, Ph.D., R.N., studies complex health conditions and symptom science, examining the factors that influence symptom experience, management and intervention strategies. Her objective is to enhance health outcomes and quality of life through a patient-centered approach that facilitates tailored interventions. Her work supports the advancement of sustainable healthcare practices by addressing multifaceted health challenges and analyzing the interactions among contributing elements. She also helps establish standards of care that prioritize optimal patient outcomes and safety.

Focus areas

  • Understanding symptom trajectories to identify high-risk patients. Dr. Zins studies symptom trajectories, including symptoms, severity, frequency, and distress associated, and the interplay of factors that contribute to the experience, management and intervention of various symptoms. She aims to enable early identification of high-risk patients and inform the development of personalized interventions. Her goal is to improve long-term quality of life.
  • Interventions for symptom management. Dr. Zins studies individualized nonpharmacologic interventions as adjuncts for symptom management for patients with complex health conditions.

Significance to patient care

Symptoms can sometimes be missed or not fully treated. Paying attention to symptoms in patients with complex health conditions is key to giving care that is compassionate, effective and focused on the patient. Dr. Zins studies new approaches to managing symptoms that can improve care for chronic illnesses. She makes sure patients' voices are heard, meeting their needs throughout their illnesses. She also helps improve quality of life, health outcomes and patient care involvement.
