Douglas L. Wood, M.D., is medical director of Mayo Clinic's Center for Innovation. He and his team of designers, project managers, technology specialists and others are working to create an unparalleled experience of health care. Using human-centered design, the Center for Innovation creates solutions for care delivery, care at home, highly functional spaces and works to make existing technologies more useful for individuals. The center's partnership with Delos Living studies the impact of the built environment on human health and behavior in a unique Well Living Laboratory.

Focus areas

  • Creation of functional spaces. By understanding individuals' specific needs, the Center for Innovation provides important observational research to design specific clinical spaces.
  • Creation of service solutions. The Center for Innovation creates unique services and experiences for various clinical areas. These have included optimized team care in primary care clinics, a better prenatal experience for expectant mothers, redesign of dialysis care, creation of new care experience for cancer survivors, care for patients having proton beam therapy, regenerative medicine treatment, and care for patients during their hospital stay and transition home.
  • Creation of more-efficient interactions with technology. The Center for Innovation, partnering with the Center for Connected Care and the Center for Translational Informatics and Knowledge Management, creates easier ways to manage computer hardware with voice-user interfaces and better decision tools for people using unique software solutions. The center has produced award-winning solutions for Mayo Clinic including the Mayo Clinic app for patient use.

Significance to patient care

The Mayo Clinic Center for Innovation was the first of its kind in an academic medical center and is still one of the few centers that work to understand the unique needs of individuals at home, work, school and health care settings, as part of creating truly helpful solutions.

Dr. Wood and his team at the Center for Innovation have produced major designs and redesigns for clinical care throughout Mayo Clinic, including the Healthy Living Program, the Center for Connected Care and the Office of Population Health. The center strives to use its expertise in human-centered design to improve lives of patients.
