SUMMARY

The research of Yujia Wei, M.D., Ph.D., focuses on the development and clinical application of artificial intelligence (AI) for radiology and medical imaging. His work brings together imaging science, neuroscience and machine learning. He uses these approaches to develop quantitative biomarkers and decision-support tools that improve disease detection, characterization and outcome prediction.

Dr. Wei studies how advanced computational methods can transform medical images into clinically meaningful information across a variety of diseases and imaging modalities. Drawing on a background in neurosurgery, neuroimmunology and radiology research, he seeks to bridge AI innovation with real-world clinical practice and improve patient care through data-driven imaging analysis.

Focus areas

  • AI for radiology. Dr. Wei's research centers on building AI methods that improve the analysis and interpretation of medical imaging. His work integrates machine learning, quantitative image analysis and clinical data to identify imaging biomarkers that support disease detection, characterization and outcome prediction. These efforts aim to transform complex imaging information into objective measurements that can be incorporated into clinical practice.
  • Imaging biomarkers for neurodegenerative disease. Dr. Wei studies how quantitative imaging biomarkers can improve the diagnosis and monitoring of neurological disorders. Current research focuses on identifying structural imaging features associated with neurodegenerative diseases, including progressive supranuclear palsy and related movement disorders. By combining advanced image analysis with AI, this work seeks to improve diagnostic accuracy and provide objective measures of disease progression.
  • Quantitative assessment of subarachnoid hemorrhage. Subarachnoid hemorrhage remains a major cause of neurological disability and mortality. Dr. Wei develops automated approaches for detecting, segmenting and quantifying hemorrhage burden from CT scans. These new approaches provide rapid and reproducible assessment of disease severity, support treatment planning, and improve outcome prediction.
  • Neuroinflammation and epilepsy. Prior to focusing on medical imaging and AI, Dr. Wei investigated the biological mechanisms underlying epilepsy and neurological injury. His research examined how immune signaling pathways contribute to inflammation, neuronal damage and disease progression. Studies of complement-mediated signaling and purinergic receptor pathways provided insights into the role of neuroinflammation in epilepsy and may inform future therapeutic strategies.

Significance to patient care

Medical imaging helps doctors find and monitor many conditions, but reviewing the images can take a lot of time and may vary from one doctor to another. Dr. Wei's research focuses on creating AI tools that help healthcare professionals review these images more quickly and consistently. These tools are designed to measure changes in the body clearly and objectively, support earlier and more accurate diagnoses, and help us better understand how a condition is changing over time. By bringing advanced image analysis into everyday care, his work aims to support better decisions and more personalized treatment for patients.
