SUMMARY

Mayo Clinic researcher Eric J. Vargas, M.D., M.S., studies how endoscopy can transform the treatment of obesity, metabolic disease and complex gastrointestinal conditions. He explores minimally invasive endoscopic procedures that not only manage symptoms but also change the course of chronic disease.

Dr. Vargas develops and evaluates endoscopic bariatric and metabolic therapies for obesity, type 2 diabetes and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease. He also advances therapeutic endoscopic ultrasound techniques to manage pancreaticobiliary disease, gastric outlet obstruction and challenges associated with surgically altered anatomy.

Dr. Vargas aims to advance a more personalized approach to care by matching each patient with the most appropriate endoscopic therapy at the right time. Through this work, he seeks to deliver safe, effective treatments that reduce the burden of traditional surgery while improving patient outcomes.

Focus areas

  • Transforming the treatment of obesity and metabolic disease. Dr. Vargas studies endoscopic therapies such as endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty, transoral outlet reduction and intragastric balloons. His research seeks to establish these procedures as durable components of comprehensive obesity care and to understand their effects on weight, diabetes, liver disease, quality of life and long-term health.
  • Advancing precision metabolic endoscopy. Not every patient responds to treatment in the same way. Dr. Vargas investigates clinical, physiological, imaging and metabolic factors that may predict treatment response. His goal is to move from a one-size-fits-all approach toward the use of personalized endoscopic therapies selected according to each patient's disease, biology and goals.
  • Developing incisionless therapies for complex digestive diseases. Dr. Vargas evaluates therapeutic endoscopic ultrasound procedures for pancreatic fluid collection, gallbladder and bile duct disease, gastric outlet obstruction, and surgically altered anatomy. His work aims to replace selected surgical or radiological interventions with less invasive procedures while preserving effectiveness, safety and durability.
  • Understanding how endoscopic therapies change human physiology. Dr. Vargas investigates how endoscopic interventions influence gastric emptying, appetite regulation, metabolic signaling, glucose control and liver health. By defining the mechanisms that drive treatment response, his team works to refine current therapies and develop new approaches to treating metabolic disease through the gastrointestinal tract.
  • Building the systems needed for the future of endoscopic care. Innovation requires more than a new device or procedure. Dr. Vargas studies procedural safety, patient selection, recovery pathways, physician training, competency and multidisciplinary care delivery. His goal is to ensure that advanced endoscopic therapies can be adopted responsibly and delivered consistently to the patients most likely to benefit.

Dr. Vargas develops and studies treatment options that can make care easier for patients. Many of the procedures he investigates use a flexible tube called an endoscope, which passes through the mouth and into the digestive tract. Because these procedures do not require external incisions, patients may experience less pain and recover more quickly than they would after traditional surgery.

His research helps healthcare professionals choose the right treatment for each patient, improve procedure safety and achieve better long-term results. Ultimately, he aims to give patients more treatment options for obesity, type 2 diabetes, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease and complex digestive conditions. This can help patients receive care earlier and potentially avoid more invasive surgery.
