SUMMARY

Mayo Clinic nurse scientist Amanda C. Rossley, Ph.D., M.S.N., R.N., studies the application of gamification and other innovative learning strategies in nursing. Her work explores how game-based strategies can enhance education for nurses and patients, with the goal of improving healthcare delivery and patient outcomes. In addition to advancing the science of gamification, Dr. Rossley is passionate about creating inclusive learning environments that foster a strong sense of community and belonging among nurses and patients alike.

Focus areas

  • Gamification in nursing education. Dr. Rossley explores the use of gamification to enhance motivation, engagement and knowledge acquisition among nurses. Her work includes the development and implementation of a gamified course, Florida Basic ECG, which serves as a model for integrating game-based learning into education. This research aims to generate evidence-based guidelines for gamification in nursing education and contribute to improved nursing care delivery.
  • Psychological safety and belonging in nursing education. Dr. Rossley collaborates with colleagues to investigate the role of psychological safety and workplace culture in shaping nurse educators' experiences. Her research explores how stressors and incivility impact educators' sense of belonging and professional engagement. This work aims to inform strategies that foster inclusive, supportive environments where nurse educators can thrive and contribute meaningfully to the profession.
  • Gamification in patient education. Dr. Rossley is expanding her research into the use of gamification to improve patient education and engagement. As an inaugural participant in Mayo Clinic's Nursing Research Scholar program, she is exploring how interactive, game-based strategies can enhance patient understanding of complex health information, support behavior change and ultimately contribute to better health outcomes. This work will lay the foundation for future interventions that are both evidence-based and patient-centered.

Significance to patient care

By using gamelike tools and supportive environments, Dr. Rossley helps nurses learn important information and apply it confidently in real-life situations. The goal is to make learning stick so it can be used when it matters most in patient care. Dr. Rossley also looks at how to create safe and respectful work environments for nurse educators. In the future, she plans to use what she's learned to help patients better understand and improve their health.
