SUMMARY
Mayo Clinic researcher Eric R. Pease, D.O., M.B.A., studies factors that influence the onset and evolution of psychiatric pathology. He investigates the role of maternal substance use, early childhood sleep disorders and psychosocial factors, including how engagement with the child welfare system affects mental health outcomes. Dr. Pease collaborates with colleagues in child psychiatry to establish practice guidelines for nonspecialists, particularly primary care clinicians.
Focus areas
- Integrated care models. Dr. Pease examines integrated care models for delivering psychiatric care, including collaboration between subspecialists and primary care teams to diagnose and treat mental health conditions efficiently and effectively.
- Pediatric psychiatric risk factors. Dr. Pease works to understand risk factors for psychiatric illness in children. He assesses the biologic predisposition to developing mental health conditions alongside social and psychological factors. This includes evaluating population-level threats and universal interventions that reduce the risks of psychiatric illness.
- Medical education. Dr. Pease develops educational programs for graduate medical trainees, such as residents and fellows, and practicing clinicians who deliver care to children with psychiatric needs.
Significance to patient care
It can be hard to find mental health care for kids and teens in the United States. Because of this, many children get their mental health care from their regular doctor.
Dr. Pease is studying ways to help these regular doctors learn how to give the best possible mental health care to children and teenagers. Using a team-based approach, Dr. Pease's work ensures that more kids and teens can get the mental health support they need, when they need it.
