SUMMARY

Jun Min Koay, Psy.D., L.P., examines cognitive changes in patients with mild cognitive impairment, dementia and neurosurgical conditions such as epilepsy and brain tumors. Dr. Koay identifies key factors that influence cognitive and functional outcomes in patients with neurodegenerative conditions and those recovering from neurosurgery. He also investigates behavioral interventions designed to support cognitive health and quality of life in these populations. Dr. Koay's research integrates traditional and digital neuropsychological assessment methods with advanced neuroimaging techniques to better understand brain-behavior relationships.

Focus areas

  • Cognitive and quality-of-life outcomes of neurosurgery. Dr. Koay uses traditional and digital neuropsychological assessments, along with neuroimaging techniques, to investigate factors influencing cognitive function and quality of life in patients with brain tumors or epilepsy following neurosurgery. He also studies the neuroanatomical correlates of cognitive function.
  • Mild cognitive impairment and dementia. Dr. Koay studies cognitive and psychological changes in patients with mild cognitive impairment and dementia. As part of the Mayo Clinic Healthy Action to Benefit Independence and Thinking program, he explores factors that affect how people learn and change due to behavioral and rehabilitation interventions.
  • Cognitive changes in progressive aphasia. Dr. Koay characterizes longitudinal cognitive changes across variants of primary progressive aphasia and primary progressive apraxia of speech. He also studies their underlying neuroimaging correlates.

Significance to patient care

Conditions that affect the brain impact not only patients but also their loved ones. By studying what causes changes in thinking and daily living, Dr. Koay and his team can better understand these challenges. Their studies help guide programs and plans that support patients and families and improve quality of life. For conditions such as brain tumors or epilepsy, treatments including brain surgery can change thinking skills. Dr. Koay's research is important in understanding these changes and helping patients get the best treatment while taking care of themselves in their daily lives.
