SUMMARY

Carmen Gurrieri, M.D., is an anesthesiologist who studies regional anesthesia and perioperative management of patients undergoing orthopedic surgery. She also studies the use of regional anesthesia in rural communities.

Focus areas

Dr. Gurrieri has two main focus areas of research:

  • Perioperative impact of regional anesthesia. Dr. Gurrieri studies various regional anesthesia techniques to optimize perioperative management of patients having orthopedic surgery. Her work aims to improve early discharge for patients and enhance their early mobility after surgery.
  • Regional anesthesia in community hospitals. Dr Gurrieri also studies the use of regional anesthesia in rural areas, where it is still underused. Dr. Gurrieri hopes to broaden the use of advanced regional anesthesia techniques, especially in rural areas, to help improve perioperative pain management and hospital discharge.

Significance to patient care

Dr. Gurrieri hopes her research will help improve pain control before, during and after surgery. She also hopes her research will help patients feel more satisfied with their care and get moving sooner after having orthopedic surgery. In addition, she wants advanced anesthesia techniques to become more available in rural communities and other areas where access to specialized care may be limited.
