Chyke A. Doubeni, M.B.B.S., M.P.H., is a clinical epidemiologist and health services researcher. Dr. Doubeni's research focuses on improving the delivery and effectiveness of cancer screening and other preventive interventions. He is keenly interested in evidence-based interventions in delivery systems and communities, with a focus to enable strategies to eliminate disparities in underserved populations.

Dr. Doubeni has led or co-authored more than 100 publications in JAMA, New England Journal of Medicine, Annals of Internal Medicine, Health Affairs, Gastroenterology and others. His collaborative research has influenced guidelines on colorectal cancer screening and follow-up and supported efforts to increase uptake of screening nationally and internationally.

Focus areas

  • Optimizing delivery systems and communities to improve the process, quality and effectiveness of cancer prevention and screening
  • Improving access to care and eliminating disparities in the burden of chronic disease in communities
  • Investigating colorectal cancer disparities by comparative effectiveness of screening tests
  • Supporting national efforts to increase the uptake of colorectal cancer screening, with a focus on racial, ethnic and socioeconomic disparities
  • Conducting innovative studies of comparative effectiveness in cancer screening using observation data from integrated health care delivery systems
  • Developing novel prevention strategies for populations currently at high risk because of race, socioeconomic status or lifestyle
  • Understanding and eliminating the social determinants of health inequities

Significance to patient care

Dr. Doubeni's research aims to eliminate egregious differences in life expectancy and health outcomes between different racial and socioeconomic groups. Promoting health equity using a model that blends community engagement with evidence-to-policy translational science will ensure that screening, prevention and treatment are equally available in society. By eradicating racial and socioeconomic disparities and inequities, Dr. Doubeni hopes that access to effective screening and treatments will reduce morbidity and mortality in underserved health populations.
