SUMMARY

Wisit Cheungpasitporn, M.D., is a physician-scientist. Dr. Cheungpasitporn applies artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning and data-driven methods to improve kidney care and medical education. His work spans:

  • Acute kidney injury.
  • Chronic kidney disease.
  • Kidney transplantation.
  • Electrolyte conditions.
  • Digital health.

Dr. Cheungpasitporn studies how advanced analytics and generative AI can support clinical decision-making, personalize patient care and improve training for care teams while maintaining ethical oversight and patient safety. He also develops and evaluates AI-enhanced educational frameworks that prepare medical teams to use emerging technologies responsibly in real-world clinical settings. He integrates large clinical datasets, interdisciplinary collaboration and patient-centered design to advance precision nephrology and responsible digital transformation.

Focus areas

  • Responsible AI use in kidney care. Dr. Cheungpasitporn studies how AI can be safely and ethically integrated into nephrology practice. He examines governance frameworks, transparency, human oversight and bias mitigation. He contributes to national and international guidance on responsible AI use in kidney health. He also contributes to guideline-informed care.
  • Generative AI and clinical decision support. Dr. Cheungpasitporn evaluates large language models and generative AI tools for complex clinical reasoning tasks. His approach includes nephrology education, referral triage, ambulatory blood pressure interpretation and patient education. This research defines the strengths, limitations and appropriate roles of AI as a decision support for medical teams rather than autonomous care.
  • Precision nephrology using machine learning. Dr. Cheungpasitporn applies unsupervised machine learning and consensus clustering to identify hidden clinical phenotypes in kidney disease populations. Using large datasets from Mayo Clinic, national inpatient databases and transplant registries, his work supports individualized risk stratification and outcome prediction.
  • AI-enhanced medical and nephrology education. Dr. Cheungpasitporn designs and studies AI-enabled educational models for medical students, residents and fellows. He evaluates how case-based learning, simulations and multimodal AI tools can improve clinical reasoning, procedural skills and digital literacy across the continuum of medical training.

Significance to patient care

Dr. Cheungpasitporn's research goal is to make kidney care safer, more personalized and easier to understand. He studies how AI can help medical teams spot clues in complex medical information. His work supports earlier diagnosis and better treatment decisions for patients with kidney disease. Dr. Cheungpasitporn's research also shows when AI can help care teams and when human judgment is needed.

Dr. Cheungpasitporn develops educational tools to help patients understand their kidney health and treatment options. Together, these efforts are designed to improve care quality, reduce mistakes, and make sure that medical teams use new technologies responsibly and clearly for patients and families.
