As a neurosurgeon clinician-scientist, Mohamad Bydon, M.D., is interested in studying clinical bioinformatics.

Dr. Bydon serves as medical director of the Mayo Clinic Neurosurgical Biobank and Clinical Registry, which compiles prospective data on clinical outcomes of neurosurgical procedures. He also serves as the principal investigator of the Mayo Clinic Neuro-Informatics Laboratory, using big data to define the cost and value of medical and surgical interventions.

Focus areas

  • Biobank and clinical registries. Dr. Bydon works with prospectively collected databases that include patient-reported outcomes, molecular analysis of tissue or serum, and imaging analytics.
  • Surgical safety initiative. He also contributes to prospective trials to improve surgical safety and introduce innovations in practice.
  • Economics of health care. Dr. Bydon works to improve understanding of the impact of cost on health care utilization.
  • Predictive modeling for surgical outcomes. An additional area of focus involves creating models that can predict patient outcomes as part of an effort to provide individualized medicine.
